The barbering program emphasizes safe and efficient work practices, basic occupational and employment skills. This 1,000 hour program provides students with a solid foundation, along with skills, techniques, ethics and the values needed to be a successful barber. Upon completion of the program, graduates are able to pass the state licensing examinations.Students need to purchase their books and kit in the college bookstore prior to their first day of the course.Important Notice

A criminal conviction may disqualify an applicant from becoming licensed or may result in ineligibility for licensure for a period of three to seven years from the termination of parole, probation, judicial proceeding or date of incident.

Fred Martinez has been a licensed barber for 39 years and has been with Ogden-Weber Technical College for over 16 years. Fred is over the Barbering program. He instructs various techniques in barbering, men’s haircuts, facial shaves, etc.

Program Counselor

Program Counselors are professionally trained and available for all students at the college. They are available to assist students who have questions regarding their program, progress and attendance, and program changes. The counselors can assist students with campus and program policies or procedures, student rights, as well as the policy and processes involved in student complaints. The counseling staff is also available to discuss personal/family matters, address emergency situations, process disability support services, and provide referrals to community services.

The Barbering program provides students with the knowledge, scientific and artistic principles, and hand-on skills needed to work in the barbering industry. Instruction includes: cutting hair and using razors, shears and clippers; shaving and mustache/beard design; and understanding hygiene, skin and scalp disorders, anatomy, sterilization and sanitation, safety, and salon operation. Upon completion, students have the knowledge and skills to take the state written and practical examinations for licensure.

Program Objectives



The Barbering program objectives are prescribed by state statue and include:

Cutting hair and using razors, shears and clippers
Shaving, and mustache/beard design
Understanding hygiene, skin and scalp disorders, anatomy, sterilization and sanitation, safety, and salon operation
Applying human-relation skills in the workforce.

Applicants must:

Complete a 1,000 Barbering program
Pass the state theory and practical examinations
Pay required fees to the Utah Department of Professional Licensing.

Admission Requirements



To enroll in an Ogden-Weber Technical College program students must meet designated admission requirements. These requirements are used to evaluate student skill level needed to be successful in the program.



Admissions requirements may be met by testing in the college’s Testing Center or by bringing a copy of your external testing or alternative documentation to the Testing Center for approval. Pre-enrollment Advisors, Counselors, Enrollment staff and Testing Center staff can help you determine if your external testing or alternative documentation meets the admissions requirements for your desired program.

Reading Test Taken in the past three years: Accuplacer Next Generation: 236, Accuplacer: 55, TABE 8.0
Taken in the past five years: ACT Reading: 16, SAT English:400
Alternative: English0955 (LEAP 2510 & 2520) or higher with a C grade or better, Associates Degree or higher, certificate completion of Ogden-Weber Technical College in an equivalent level. High School transcript with a 3.0 cumulative GPA may be used for current high school students and up to three years beyond graduation.
