NSCC Offers New Google IT Training Program to Help Residents Gain Topical Skills in Growing Industry

Registration currently open; Program launches July 27

DANVERS – North Shore Community College (NSCC) is working to train residents who are looking for new opportunities or a new work-from-home career. The Google IT Support Professional Certificate, an online training program developed by Google and offered at NSCC, teaches interested individuals the skills needed to start a career in IT support, which is one of the fastest growing fields in the U.S. The program comes to Danvers through a collaboration with Google and Jobs for the Future, supported with funding from Google.org. Registration is currently open at Professional@northshore.edu. The program kicks off July 27.

“At NSCC, we are focused on education and training that will fuel our workforce and stimulate our economy now and into the future,” said Dean Dianne Palter Gill.  “We are excited to promote this important training program and we are glad to be able to support students in a new way, thanks to Jobs for the Future.”

The program is a part of Grow with Google, an initiative that helps ensure that the opportunities created by technology are available to everyone. Hosted on the Coursera online learning platform, the certificate is designed to teach individuals the skills needed for entry-level IT support positions. No prior IT experience is needed. The program includes five courses, with a dynamic mix of video lectures, quizzes and hands-on labs and widgets. Individuals will learn about troubleshooting, customer service, networking, operating systems, system administration and security. Students will have the support of an NSCC instructor through weekly sessions and office hours as they move through this online program.

“There are currently thousands of open jobs in IT in Massachusetts,” continued Dean Palter Gill. “Because many jobs in IT can be done from home, it makes it an appealing career now and into the coming months. With that in mind, now is the perfect time to offer this innovative at-home training program in IT. The course will teach people new skills and will help create opportunities for those who need to shift careers, in turn helping to keep our economy moving.”

In 2020, NSCC renewed its commitment to continue to power Massachusetts’ workforce through new partnerships and innovative learning opportunities. Several new collaborations are currently in the works to ensure that residents have the skills needed to keep the economy and our state moving forward.

Start your career in IT

IT support is a dynamic, fast-growing field which is projected to grow 10% between 2018 and 2028 — faster than the average of all other occupations. And the median salary is $53,470 according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.

In the United States alone, there are over 215,000 open IT support roles as more and more people use technology for some part of their work. But sometimes things go wrong — hardware breaks, networks go down, systems fail — and when they do, it’s vital to have team members who know what to do.

At Google, the challenge we faced in finding qualified candidates to join our own IT support team inspired the creation of a new training program. Now we’re using the IT support training we implemented at Google as the basis for the Google IT Professional Certificates. No college degree is necessary.
